I haven't read Days of Blood & Starlight yet, but I loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone! I can't wait to start some of these series, like His Fair Assassin and Lumatere Chronicles. Great picks!
Yes, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is amazing. I actually liked Days even better because it was darker but still just as beautiful. Let me know what you think about those two series - the Lumatere books are one of my favorite series!
I actually liked the sequel better (another one to add to my list!). It's called Speaker for the Dead, and it's more about (a very dysfunctional) family and dealing with cultural/species differences.
Okay friends, strap in, this is going to be quite a rant about cultural appropriation and all the interactions that have been bothering me lately. I am just sick of hearing from my (predominantly white) friends how indignation at cultural appropriation is so "extra" and unnecessary, so here is my attempt to explain through my south Asian/desi lens exactly what I consider to be cultural appropriation and why it bugs me. Basically it boils down to this: If I get fun of for a certain part of my culture or heritage, but a white person can do the same thing and is applauded for being "boho chic", it's cultural appropriation. If a bunch of white people start profiting off of a part of my culture or start a "trend" without acknowledging the source, that's cultural appropriation too. Way back during Sci-Fi November , I made a flowchart of Science fiction subgenres so that everyone could find the sub-genre that they liked the most. The idea was that people could find recommendations in genres they didn't normally read, and maybe find a new favorite series or subgenre. It was way more popular than I imagined it would be, and a lot of you readers asked for a fantasy flowchart . Well, 6 months later, here it is! Again, some subgenres I made up and some are standard. I have read/watched most of these, but there are a few I haven't because I'm not familiar with every subgenre of fantasy. If you would like more suggestions in any of these genres, feel free to ask! I obviously couldn't fit all my suggestions on this tiny flowchart :) Fantasy Subgenre Flowchart You can always find the Sci-fi and Fantasy subgenre flowcharts by clicking on the SF/F Subgenre Flowcharts tab at the top of the page. Did you find a new subge
So it's finally over. That was an amazing book! Thank you everyone for joining in and making my first readalong so much fun :) I have said over and over again that Brandon Sanderson is a storytelling god. This book makes me believe it even more fiercely - it takes a mastermind to create such intricate worlds and piece together so many character and plot threads. He does such a great job of feeding you just enough answers/revelations to keep you happy, but keeps you hanging by dangling all sorts of questions for you to answer. Not to mention the bombshells he throws in at the end... Having read Mistborn, I really should have been more prepared for disaster and mindblowing moments towards the end of the book. The end was just bombshell after bombshell - some were interesting revelations, and others were shattering. The bombshells of this week: 1) Navani proves that Dalinar's visions are real , and says his unconscious decoding of an ancient language will help pave the
Ooh nice! These are new to me in the sense that I've never read them! Although, I've seen a few of these around today in the top 10 picks!
